Best Answer: 3 Different ways 1. Use distance and click the end points of a line (have osnap on for this, F3 Togles it on and off) 2. Type List and select the line if it is drawn the total length. My example of use: I design heat distribution systems in AutoCAD and we use steel pipes of standard 12 m length. Sometimes we need to bend the pipes a bit if the street is not straight. Then I need to draw an arc which is exactly 12 m long and has a certain radius (same as the street).

Course details
Scott Onstott has been using AutoCAD for 24 years and has witnessed its evolution into the world-leading application for computer-aided drafting and design. You too can harness its power and start creating detailed CAD drawings, whatever your field: design, architecture, or engineering. In this in-depth course, Scott shows you how to draw precise, measured 2D drawings—the basis of design communication the world over. Then he shows how to create and modify geometry, layers, blocks, attributes, dimensions, and layouts, and finally, how to start sharing your drawings with others.Skills covered in this course
Welcome
There are many different ways to measure objects in AutoCAD, and in this video you will learn some of them. Open the architectural sample file in the Chapter 10 folder and then go up here to the Utilities panel and open up this flyout. Let's begin by measuring a distance. This executes the Measure Geom command. I'd like to measure the distance here from this point to this point. When I click the second point, the information is sort of frozen there on the screen for a moment while we examine it. This information isn't really a dimension in that it doesn't print. It's just for your information only. Here we can learn that it's four feet from here to here, and that the vertical distance is given here, and the horizontal distance is given here. We can measure the angle, next, by clicking on the line and a second line. Here we see the angle between those two objects. Alternatively, we could calculate the area of the room. And this is done simply by clicking each corner point of the room. Now I'll press Enter and it will give us the area information right here in square inches, and, more usefully, in square feet. Incidentally, there's also the perimeter listed here. Obviously, in a 3D model you could calculate a volume, and you can calculate the radii or angles of lines as I've said. I'll click exit. So each one of those options is broken out into a different icon here for convenience. You can alternatively use the older Distance command. Type d-i for dist, enter, and then just click two points to measure the distance between them. It gives you the information down here on the command line. Aside from the measurement commands that I have already presented, you can measure objects by querying their properties. So for example, I will select this line, and then type p-r for properties, Enter. That opens up this palette, and we need to scroll down in the list by dragging this bar. And you'll see over here that we have information about the length, is four feet, the angle with respect to zero degrees, which is going horizontally to the right, and we have the deltas, that is, the change in these three different axes. The Properties palette is rather large, and that's why we have another alternative called Quick Properties. You can access that by adding another button to the status bar. Click Customization and choose Quick Properties, and that adds this icon right here. Toggle the mode on and then click on an object. This gives us what we call quick properties about the object. Just a few important pieces of information. Included among them sometimes is measurement information, such as the length. It depends, though, on which type of object you click on. So, for example, if I come down here and click on this polyline, it doesn't give us measurement information in this case. If I wanted to know the length of that polyline, I could explode it and then click on one of its lines, and then I can learn how long that is. After learning that, I could then undo. If you ever need to calculate something, you don't need to pull out a pocket calculator. You can just use the AutoCAD, and type q-c for quick calc, and you have this calculator here. Now, aside from the obvious calculator functions, you can also manipulate imperial units, and this can be handy. So, for example, let's say I want to add some distance, like five foot three and an eighth plus three foot three and a third. It will tell me the answer over here. However, it will round the answer to the precision of your units. Just be aware of that. If we go to units, we can see how precise you're getting information right here. Also in quick calc, you can measure angles, distances, get the coordinates of a specific point, or the coordinates of a point implied by the intersection of two lines. The older calculator is built into the command line. So you can be, let's say, in the middle of the line command, drawing a line, and then realize, oh, I want to add up a couple of things. To use this command-line version of the calculator. You press apostrophe or foot symbol to indicate that you want a transparent command, that is, a command that operates on top of the current command. It does not interrupt what you're doing. So I've called for a transparent command, and then I'll type c-a-l for calculator and press Enter. Now it says expression, and I could then add two numbers. I'll just add three plus seven, press Enter, and it gives me that information right here. And not only that, but it entered it into the line command as a distance. So that's an alternative way to calculate things on the fly. So there you have it, many different ways to measure objects in AutoCAD.

AutoCAD Dynamic Blocks :: Change Length Of Line Based On Length Of Attribute
Jan 8, 2013Is it possible to change the length of a line based on the length of an attribute?
I'd like to make the line a MINIMUM length of X' (I haven't decided how long yet--but know I'll need a minimum). But then after the user fills in the attribute, I'd like the length of the line to change to the length of the attribute plus a small amount (again, I haven't decided yet how much extra).
AutoCAD Dynamic Blocks :: Line Length Follow Content Length Of Attribute
Mar 16, 2012I was wondering if there is a way with DB's to have a line 'follow' or 'grow' with the content/value length of an attribute. Maybe some method of linking the attribute width to length of the line? Essentially, it would work just like turning on the underline setting when typing in mtext editor (or any program with an underline option for that matter), expect that the line could be placed anywhere, and would not have to reside directly below the text.
AutoCAD Map 3D :: Mapdist Command - Measurement Different From Actual Created Line
Dec 14, 2012When using the mapdist command the measurement is different from the actual line that I create. The map coordinates and the maptrack coordinates match. When I open a older drawing there is not an issue. Did I somehow change the origin of my template.
Here is sample from the command line
Command: _mapdist
Specify first point:
Specify second point:
Distance = 12.7513 (Foot)
Azimuth = 38 degrees (forward), 218 degrees (reverse)
Delta X = 15.0000, Delta Y = -0.0381
AutoCad :: How To Make Third Line Relative To Second Line So Angle Is 75 Degrees And A Certain Length
Oct 27, 2009I have been practicing using a older book(copyright 1990) and it has some decent exercises in it. I was able to do this one but it seems I can't find the proper way to do this.First drawing a line a certain distance.ortho on,click the first point anywhere, move curser to the left and click again. that gives me a line at 180 degrees at what ever length.Line command again starting at the second point of the first line.after clicking that point,I type in @2.38<150 that gives me a line2.38 long at 150 degrees.now how do i make a third line relative to the second line so that the angle is 75 degrees and a certain length.the picture shows what I am trying to draw.using the polar cordinates you get an angle based off the UCS( which is set at world) when you try to draw the third line .that makes the angle between line 2 an 3 not the angle that I want.To make the drawing,I rotated the ucs -30 degrees. But there has to be a better way than that.
AutoCAD 2013 :: Won't Allow To Specify Length Of A Line
Jun 13, 2013Download ultraman fighting evolution 3 ps2 iso maker. I have used AutoCad for a few years and I installed 2013 to my laptop recently.I noticed that I couldn't specify how long a line should be. When I select the line tool and specify the base point and type how long it should be i.e. 3' and a red box appears around the dimension box and the line isn't drawn. I tried not specifying a unit of length and it draws the line just fine. But for some reason it wont complete the line if I specify feet or inches.

AutoCAD LT :: Using Symbol To Enter Line Length?
Dec 9, 2011I'm having a problem entering line lengths - something I remember occurring some time ago - but I can't' recall how I remedied it. The '@' symbol take time to register - instead of registering immediately as previously. I now have to check the command line each time and allow a moment for it to register before entering the values.
AutoCAD 2013 :: Length Of Line On Mouseover?
Dec 5, 2012In previous versions of autocad after I select a line, and put the mouse pointer over a vertex, there would be an on screen number displaying the length of the line. In Autocad 2013 this seems to have disappeared. how to get it back?
AutoCad 2D :: Control Length Of Dimension Line
Nov 15, 2013In Autocad 2006, is there a way to control the length of the dimension line when it extends outside of the dimension distance itself? In other words, when a dimension is small, and the arrowheads flip to the outside of the dimension parameter, the text and the extension line outside of the dimension seems to go to far outside of the dimension area.
Can I control how far outside of the dimension area that this line and text are placed? They seem to go to far out on my drawings. I prefer them to be closer to the actual dimension area instead of extending so far out. Didn't know if there was a control for this and where to find it.

AutoCad :: Measure Length Of Continuous Line?
Oct 12, 2006Is there a tool where you just click on any line and it tells you how long the line is from end to end?
Basically I am drawing a curvy line that twists and turns here and there, but the line has to be less then so long. So I have to approximate the length by doing strait measurements and multiplying, it's really a pain.
I'd much rather just click the line, and it tell me how long it is from end to end, across turns and rounded edges and corners.
AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Automatic Figure And Line Creation Using CSV / Text File Format Data

AutoCAD 2010 :: Line Length Display Box Missing?
Oct 19, 2010I must have changed a setting and now I cannot figure out what I did.
On AutoCad at school, when drawing a line, there is a light blue dialogue box that would pop up above the cursor telling you the length of the line before you set it. (not the coordinates).
This is not showing up on the educational version of AutoCad I am running at home.
AutoCad :: Line Length Display On Endpoint Hovering
Feb 1, 2013So when i would select a line, hover over one of the endpoints, the length and angle would be shown, as a quick dimension. for some reason that has stopped, all it does now if i select the line, hover over an endpoint the only thing it says is stretch, or lengthen.
RANT!!! (come on 2013, thats stupid, stretch and lengthen are basically the same thing, dont you think if i stretch something it would automatically lengthen something, and if i lenghtened something, it in fact would also be stretching it. and to see you replaced the simple dimensioning of that line with a pointless i wouldnt call it option. now to figure out the length i have to keep the properties file open, or i have to draw a faux line over the current one just to check its length, or literally i have to draw a dimension line.) EnD!!
What option might have been turned off? and that the new array no longer gives you a box, but you do it all through the command line. or the dynamic input. That was an AWESOME box that i do miss dearly, and no longer have the option to bring back.
AutoCad :: How To Draw Line To Exact Coordinate And Length

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Surface Style - Line Component Length
Jun 20, 2013I have surface style (could be slope or spot elevation) with a 2 line component, and text component above and below the line. I'm trying to create on style for many options. I'm using c3d 2013, but moving to 2014.
I would like to do the following after placing the label:
1. adjust the length of the line component. (ex: as I rotate the lable, the length of seg 1 changes )
2. turn off one of the line component
3. adjust the angle of one of the line component.
4. when drag, the length of the line changes to a new value.
and while I'm asking, is there a way to move/rotate/drag the syle to a percise distance. I want the leader to be 1 unit long at 30 degree angle.

AutoCad :: Circle Radius Doesn't Match Up With Line Length
Apr 26, 2011I'm trying to plan an access road which must run at least 2.5m away from an existing fenceline. I've put a few parallel road lines in at 3m distance, but at the fence bends I decided to put some circles at the bend points to give me a 3m radius. When I did this I was suprised to find that the circle extends further than my access road. I've dimensioned them both up, CAD is telling me they're both 3m away but they're clearly not at the same distance.
